ABOUT ME

Hi! My name is Rachel Baer.

I grew up as a missionary kid in Togo, West Africa, and Northeast China, where I developed a passion for missionary kids and member care!
My dream was to become a counselor for missionaries and to help them process their experiences in healthy ways!

For my college education, I studied Human Services at the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, with the dream of becoming a counselor for missionaries! During the summer of 2018, I spent 6 weeks interning with Mission Training International (MTI). My experience there confirmed the importance of equipping missionaries with lessons and tools that help them thrive, not just survive, on the mission field.

Now, I am returning to MTI for a 1.5 year commitment starting Jan. 6, 2020 to serve as the Teen Trainer! I am so excited for how God will use my own experiences as a missionary kid to bless the teenagers I get to teach. My goal is to provide a safe space for them to process and to teach them important lessons that will benefit their transition. MY ROLE

Serving as Teen Trainer

Teaching

I will teach lessons about adjusting to a new culture, learning a new language, setting expectations, processing emotions and developing their identity. Our small group environment will allow teens to ask questions and process their shared experience together.

Supporting

I will provide a safe space for teens to process their fears, griefs, and frustrations. As a fellow missionary kid who has shared in their challenges, I will support them with a listening ear and understanding heart. Beyond answering questions, I will be a friend to walk with them.

Coaching

I will meet with parents of teens for coaching. These meetings will involve sharing my observations, insights, and suggestions for parents regarding their teens. I will lovingly challenge parents on how they can better support their teens in the midst of transition.

The culture shock and all that goes with it has been very difficult for us. For me it was very helpful to have been forewarned, to know that stages of adaptation can be anticipated and are normal for all, and that just as predictable as the hard times is the fact that one will eventually acclimate and life will seem normal again.

Compass (MTI Children's Program) has been a very big impact. We were prepared to go and serve. You taught us about things we never considered: exit and enter, grief,
managing conflict. You have helped us improve our relationship as a
couple and that will improve our relationship/witness to our family.

I think just being aware of the issues involved in being overseas actually helps to overcome the issues themselves.
